The Old Truman Brewery – what it was and what it is

London’s regeneration is not something that happens only by building new developments. There is the great ability to give a second life to abandoned buildings and one interesting case is the Truman’s Brewery.

Located in Brick Lane and founded in 1666 under the name of Black Eagle Brewery, it took the final name in the 18th century when it was bought by Benjamin Truman. The company grew so much to become the biggest brewery in the world during the 19th century producing porter and pale ale.

Unfortunately, due to competition with imported beers, the rise of lagers and being acquired by Grand Metropolitan, the brewery was shut in 1989.

Today the massive complex is home to offices, retail, leisure and event spaces and is the perfect surround to Brick Lane Market.
